What is your favorite Sci-fi film?
Aug 14, 2009 | 10 Comments | @andrewmarcec
With the release of Neill Blomkamp’s “District 9″ releasing today, and the soon to be released first footage of James Cameron’s “Avatar” following close behind I thought it would be a great idea to see how diverse the sci-fi fan base really is. So, all readers must write in their favorite sci-fi film of all time in the comments section. Now, there are restrictions, we don’t want a comment post filled with Battlestar Galactica…let’s face it, that’s a tv series (however BSG Razor I will allow). We are focusing on movies here. Second rule, if you name a film from a franchise, you must give the full title (i.e.-Star Trek IV-The Voyage Home). We aren’t trying to impress people here, so don’t everyone feel like you have to select “Blade Runner” and look cool. If you dig “Barbarella”, list it!
I’ll get the ball rolling with….

(Star Trek: First Contact)
Who doesn’t want to see Picard face off with the mothereffing Borg?!?!

Aug 14th, 2009That was a great Star Trek, however I have to go with Star Trek, Wrath of Khan as my favorite of that series.
BUT my favorite sci-fi film of all time HAS to be Cherry 2000!!!

Aug 14th, 2009Spaceballs?
Ha, since most people seem to go with the obvious easy ones, lets pick one from my dad. According to IMDB, the original Rollerball is considered Sci-Fi and I love that movie. Capricorn One is good (before O.J. killed bitches) though it doesn’t actually take place in space.
Which Star Trek is about saving the whales? I’ll go with that one.

Aug 14th, 2009Jess,
The whale saving one would be Star Trek IV-The Voyage Home.
Good call on Capricorn One…it passes as sci-fi due to the nature of it’s plot…no, the plot has nothing to do with OJ’s murders.

Aug 14th, 2009I’m going to cast my vote for Gattaca: great story, good music, perfect cinematography and set design. While I haven’t seen District 9 yet, I have to guess there’s a similarly human and societal basis for both; an examining of ethical and moral issues in a futuristic or science fiction setting.
If we were discussing action based scifi (a completely different genre according to some), I’d probably vote for Star Trek (2009).

Aug 14th, 2009From what I’ve been reading District 9 is based on Neill’s personal experiences in South Africa…seems like a great way to go out and tell a story, I’m looking forward to seeing it!
