A lonely, abandoned road, once a pathway allowing families to navigate in their posh cars to far off lands.  Now an ancient relic of a time fading from a man’s memory, a time never to be known by his son.  They follow the road, hoping it will bring them peace, warmth, salvation, only they don’t know where this road will lead.  After the fall of man they feel they are the last survivors who haven’t succumbed to the temptation of cannibalism, the last of the good guys on their life’s quest.  Survival.

After an unexplained apocalypse a man and his son take to the road with a shopping cart filled with essentials and a pistol with two rounds.  The winter is approaching quickly, and they only hope that is left in them is to travel south, hoping to find a better quality of life.  However the road brings with it many unexpected things; crazed men, cannibals, the hopeless.  The man knows the death is immanent, but because of an argument he had with his wife he refuses to give up no matter what obstacle lies ahead of them.  His attempt to keep the boy safe grows tougher each day as his food stores grow short, his son begins to doubt his judgment, and the sickness inside him makes him cough of more blood each day.  The road is always there, and they will follow it until it ends.

Cormac McCarthy, author of such works as “No Country For Old Men” and “All The Pretty Horses” published this novel in 2006.  The film adaptation, starring Viggo Mortensen, Charlize Theron, Guy Pierce, and Robert Duvall is slated for a 2009 release after several delays due to the film being too depressing.  Cormac got the idea after a 2003 trip to El Paso, Texas with his son John, whom the book is dedicated to.  They debated what the future of the town looked like, and Cormac imagined fires on the hills and thought of his son.  In 2007 it won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, this award added to the several it had won since its release.

The book sounds a lot better to me than the movie trailers did. I like the underlying message. I might have to read this before checking out the film.
