New Orleans – Day 1

Well, I made it here to New Orleans and believe me when I say it was a long day.  I was up at 4:45am to catch my cab to the airport.  The flight surprisingly left early and arrived in New Orleans early as well!  So everything was going so incredibly smooth…until I made it to the hotel.  I’m staying at a folksy place called The Place D’Armes right in the French quarter.  It’s a great, and haunted (no ghosts yet) hotel.  I arrived at 11am, and they said my room wouldn’t be ready until 4pm.  So I wandered the streets for 5 hours, had a group of Jamaicans buy me some beers, was harassed by several strippers and their pimps, saw about 5 voodoo shops (all of which are run by fat white guys…you try and figure that out), ended up at the Aquarium because it was air conditioned, and finally got to my room around 4:30pm.

For lunch I had my first Po’boy sandwich for lunch.  Jess (Doug’s fiancee) instructed me to go to a local joint called “Johnny’s Po’Boys” for my first one.  It was amazing.  Just a small place that was packed full of people.  I tried the Roast Beef Po’Boy first (don’t worry I will be having a shrimp by the end of the week).  It was excellent, I highly recommend this sandwich.

For dinner I met with Jess and her family for her mom’s birthday.  Went to a local Mexican restaurant and had several very strong margaritas.  We then made our way to bourbon st. and a place called Pat O’Brien’s.  Jess’ brother knew the bartender and we were treated to a much fabled drink…Jamaicanmecrazy.  Seriously that’s what it was called.  Very heavy on the liquor with a hint of coconut.

I finally crashed last night around 11:30.  Sleep was amazing.
