Do You Have The Drive? Music

With the immense plethora of music there is to choose from now, iPods, iPhones, and a fairly cheap cost, music is something that has become increasingly important in our everyday lives.  Some people listen to the lyrics and the message of the story, others listen to only the tunes and harmonies, but no matter what you listen for there is always something running through your mind.

I’m of the latter group, I hardly ever head words in songs unless they are repeated over and over, even then I’m lucky to catch it.  If a song is written to be deep or with an amazing insightful message, I miss it.  I have recently grown an aversion to all music with lyrics as I listen to my iPod in the morning on the way to work.  So what do I listen to, and how does it affect me?

I do have a wide variety of music I listen to, anywhere from classical to metal, however I love listening to movie scores the most.  The reason I don’t listen to the lyrics of most songs is because they all are telling their own story.  As I do anything music related I try to fit my own story to the mood of the music, if I listen to their lyrics then I’m not thinking of my own stories, it’s just a visualization of what they are singing about.  For me it’s all about feeling.  How does this music make me feel?  What type of scene does this music make me think of.

When I listen to classical or movie scores it mostly centers around the dramatic or something that is incredibly contrasting to the music.  For example let’s look at the ending fight scene of “Dead Alive”.

Though the music in this scene is the opposite of what you would imagine killing zombies, it works perfectly!  This contrast is something that I always aspire to have with the music I listen to…but I’m a horror writer.

When I listen to metal, bands like Atreyu or Avenged Sevenfold, I always think of heroic escapes, or the selfless albeit deadly acts that we can do for one another, even for something as over saturated as a love story.  It all depends on how this sets the scene of what you are thinking of.

Here are some of my favorite albums to listen to for ideas:

Oldboy:

Avenged Sevenfold: Waking The Fallen:

These are just a few choice selections from what I currently listen to to get inspired or get ideas.  What do you find works best for you?  Are you a lyric listener or a hearer of only harmonies?  Is there a single band/composer out there that you feel everyone needs to know about?
