Do You Have The Drive? Balance
Aug 19, 2009 | No Comments | @andrewmarcec
When I go about writing these posts I try to keep things relating to situations that I’ve currently experienced and what I do to resolve the situation. This post is no different, in fact this is probably my most relevant post in Do You Have The Drive to date. Now, I know that I’ve touched on scheduling in the past, and that as I write these I’m sure so many people walk away thinking, “wow the way this dude works he’s going to run himself ragged.” You aren’t lying with that statement. That’s why this weeks topic is so important.
Balance is an incredible thing when you attain it, but attaining it is a very difficult thing indeed. How do you not venture too far off the spectrum one way or the other? If you are anything like me you get so caught up in the work that you shun the outside world until you feel you are satisfied…but that’s also a problem, because people like us are never satisfied. I like to live by the phrase “I’ll sleep when I”m dead,” and I know that several of my friends think the same way. There is so much we want to do in life, but we feel that it all revolves around work, but then our lives start to revolve around the work and they stop revolving around living.
This is a huge problem! We have dreams and ambitions with jobs due, not only to the invisible hand (yes, I just got economic on your asses), but also so that we will be happy with what we do for a living! Recently my grandmother passed away, it was very hard the last few years due to her growing immobility and medical problems, however she was 80 and lived a full life. I spoke with her quite often, and she always told me about the different jobs that she had while raising a family, and she was never upset. She found the balance. The work alone isn’t going to make us happy, it’s what we due aside from the work as well.
Since her funeral I have been working incredibly hard at breaking my molds, shattering my routines, and generally trying to just enjoy everything. So far, I’ve had nothing but success, all the worries that I used to have don’t seem to bother me anymore. I’ve branched out, made friends, spend the past five weekends out of my apt (my dungeon I sometimes call it), BUT I’ve still managed to get my work done. Granted some of my personal deadlines get pushed back a little bit, but I feel as though I’m starting to find a balance. My day job is going better, the days go quicker, and the weekends are here before I know it.
In previous posts I’ve talked about using your Google calendar to schedule out your posts, keep on a schedule, use the plentiful and ever growing amount of resources that we have at our fingertips to get the job done, and most importantly…be happy.
How have you gotten balance in the past? What are ways that you try to maintain it?
