Cut Him Some Slack

As more news develops about the “Castlevania” movie people have started coming out of the woodwork loudly voicing their hatred for Paul W.S. Anderson all over the internet.  Many claims go so far as to compare him to Uwe Boll.  I think we are jumping to some harsh conclusions here, first off Paul isn’t even in line to direct “Castlevania”, he’s only producing.  James Wan is the current director for the film, and I don’t know many people who weren’t impressed with “Saw”, and “Death Sentence” was actually really cool…but I digress.

Lets take a look back at Paul W.S. Anderson’s career (yes even the couple of flops) and put everyone’s mind at ease.

Mortal Kombat:

Paul directed this one after a film called “Shopping” with Jude Law and Sean Bean.  However, before everyone jumps on my case saying how much they detest this film remember, we grew up in the Mortal Kombat generation.  It wowed us with inserting real people into animated backgrounds, and for some of us, was our first introduction into the dreaded Fatality.  Plus, I think that everyone still remembers the Sega Genisis blood code (A+B+A+C+A+B+B for those who don’t know).  So we are looking at this film through nostalgic eyes, I remember loving every second of this film the first time I saw it.  “Holy shit that’s fucking Goro!” I remember screaming, and Johnney Cash was perfectly cast.  Plus when compared side by side with “Street Fighter” this movie looks like “Citizen Kane”.

Paul points – 3 out of 5 purely for fun nostalgia.

Okay, I think this movie COULD have been awesome, however this suffered from a very common Hollywood syndrome.  Old action star trying to do an action movie.  If anyone other than Kurt Russell played this role I think it could have been way better.  All the elements were there, and I found it to have a decent story line.  Kurt just couldn’t pull it off.

I saw this movie like three times in theaters, it’s badass and really ramped up the zombie genre…I would even go so far as to say it’s one of the best video game adaptations to date.

Death Race:

I went into this one incredibly skeptical.  First off, I”m not a fan of remakes, secondly…a movie about cars with guns, sounds boring.  However, after watching it I was impressed as hell.  This movie turned out so awesome and fun, and that’s all I was really looking for anyway, just to be entertained.  Major props given.

Running Total Paul Points: 21 out of 30.

Okay so that’s the grand total so far, a 70%…that’s not only passing, that’s average!  So Paul is merely directing films that are exactly what we expect, nothing more and nothing less.

What do you think?
